Einstein told us that everything was made up of the same thing, namely: energy!
Clandestine knowledge passed down through generations, meant traditional Yogis understood that an 'energy body' existed together with the physical body, and was affected by thought, trauma and emotions, creating imbalances which then manifested as physical symptoms or non-serving habits. This wisdom reflects Ayurvedic philosophy and a health care approach which treats every symptom as a sign of imbalance.
The Ancient Chinese also sought to re-address imbalances by tapping into the meridian system, often via acupuncture, freeing blockages and releasing the flow of energy, or 'qi', so that body and mind could be nourished and allowed to regain energetic balance and therefore health.
Many complimentary approaches base their practice on the balance of energy, release of trauma and/or the changing of belief patterns.
The philosophy on which Western Nursing Theory is based centers around treating the whole person, with it widely being accepted that a person's 'frame of mind' or 'attitude' can be helpful or detrimental to maintenance of health and/or rehabilitation. There is also recognition that trauma of any kind can exacerbate or create ill-ness/dis-ease.
